Subaru Core DNA

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD)

Many vehicles today boast four-wheel drive. But only Subaru has SAWD, which distributes power to all four wheels for better traction on wet and slippery roads. The entire drive system, from the longitudinally mounted horizontally opposed Boxer engine to the rear differential, is mounted in a straight, symmetrical line.

Subaru’s SAWD technology is also permanently engaged: the power is continually and actively distributed to the individual wheel or wheels with the best traction, ensuring enhanced control. Unlike other manufacturers, we don’t build a four-wheel-drive car on a two-wheel-drive platform. Doing so would force gearbox output to be rerouted before reaching the wheels, causing a delay in response when loss of traction is detected. Instead, we make permanent SAWD the cornerstone of our vehicle design, allowing a fast, direct route for traction to reach all four wheels.

The benefits of permanent all-wheel drive aren’t seen just when driving off-road. It’s the safest and most engaging way to drive on all roads – especially if the weather is bad or the road surface is slippery. All-wheel drive is invaluable when traction is important in everyday driving situations – like pulling out at junctions, for example. Power transfer is direct, ensuring an instantaneous, sure-footed response if loss of traction is detected.

Subaru Boxer Engine

While most engines stand vertically, our Subaru Boxer engine lays flat, delivering handling that no other engine can. Sitting horizontally in the engine bay, it moves like a boxer’s fists with a punch and counterpunch action. With perfect balance and a much lower centre of gravity, it creates less noise and vibration too.

All of this means greater on-road handling, more stability, more performance, more fun and a more confident driving experience than any other car company can deliver, thanks to an engine like no other.

Lineartronic™ Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

A Lineartronic™ CVT, which uses a chain instead of the typical belt to manage its infinite transmission ratios, allows for a greater span of overall ratios for improved performance and efficiency as well as faster response to throttle input.

Lineartronic™ is longitudinally paired with an active, torque-split all-wheel drive system that responds to traction conditions, transmission and driver inputs by continuously controlling the torque distribution front to rear. Paddle shifters also provide either a six or eight-step simulated manual mode for quick and sporty response on demand.

Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE)

Switch between different preprogrammed engine and transmission maps to suit driving conditions or your driving mood with SI-DRIVE. Controlling the engine and transmission electronically, the SI-DRIVE switch can easily be used to change between three preprogrammed driving modes, ranging from gentle and efficient power delivery in Intelligent mode to sportier and more responsive in Sport mode and high performance in Sport Sharp mode.

S# mode summons up the engine and transmission’s most performance-oriented profiles, offering quick acceleration and sharper response. Ideal for merging or overtaking on the highway, or when enjoying a stint of spirited driving, Sport Sharp unleashes the maximum potential of your Subaru.

Multi-mode Driver-Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD)

The Multi-mode DCCD is a cutting-edge, electronically controlled all-wheel drive enhancement system. It incorporates a 35:65 front-to-rear torque distribution planetary gear in the centre differential and an electronically controlled Limited-Slip Differential (LSD) mechanism. It automatically limits different slip levels at the wheels. With Multi-mode DCCD, the control module can detect more precisely the driver’s intentions regarding how much they want to turn the vehicle.

X-Mode

Subaru’s X-Mode with Hill Descent Control gives you reassuring control with the best possible grip, at the push of a button. Navigate poor roads and tracks, wet or icy surfaces and challenging hills calmly, safely and surely.

When activated, X-Mode with Hill Descent Control takes command of the engine, transmission, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD), brakes and other components to provide the best traction and grip in difficult conditions. You control the steering as normal. When climbing steep hills, X-Mode automatically helps maintain a constant, controlled speed and maximum traction. When descending, Hill Descent Control ensures your vehicle speed doesn’t increase, managing the braking to provide a controlled, smooth descent.

Four-wheel Independent Suspension

Suspension really matters. Too hard and the ride is harsh. Too soft and it’s bouncy with poor handling. The rigid Subaru chassis, with rear Double Wishbone Suspension System and front struts, ensures the perfect ride on even the worst of roads. The system creates more contact between the tyres and the ground. Road bumps are absorbed better, regardless of where passengers sit, while vehicle handling remains crisp and tight.
