Some time ago Joos Stassen from Subaru Nelspruit took me out in a demo XV to show me the true characteristics of the Subaru XV of which I have the 2019 model. He impressed upon me the road holding capabilities and handling dynamics of this vehicle in emergency type situations. Well true to form I had to put this to the test a couple of weeks ago. I was returning to Nelspruit from the Kruger park along the N4 highway late in the afternoon. Suddenly a vehicle approaching the highway from an intersection on the right hand side failed to stop and entered the highway trying to brake and miss traffic that was turning into the intersection. I was in the extreme left hand lane doing 100 km/hr. There was an oncoming vehicle who failed to see the transgression and swerved into my lane. All I had was a split second before a collision was imminent. There was a concrete storm water run off from the highway on my left and remembering what Joos had told me I allowed the XV to leave the highway and into the storm water run off. There was no swerving or mishandling of the XV. It remained straight and true and came back onto the highway a few metres on and luckily we missed the oncoming car. True asymmetric AWD technology. Thank you Subaru. You saved the life of my wife and I.
