If in 2006 you were looking for a premium all wheel-drive sports sedan, without a German badge on it, the Subaru legacy 2.5 GT was just the ticket. In fact, Car magazine compared it to a revered Bavarian, considered by many to be the benchmark at the time. And they came to an interesting result.
The fourth-generation Legacy featured the brand’s trademark symmetrical all-wheel drive and boxer engine. It was equipped with the Impreza WRX STI’s fiery 2.5-litre turbo engine, good for 184kW and 339Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The Legacy was voted Japan’s 2003-2004 car of the year and its EJ255 engine took a class victory in the 2006 International Engine of the Year Awards.
Today the Legacy has matured somewhat to feature the brand’s cutting-edge EyeSight safety technology and luxurious comfort, although some things never change. It’s still powered by a boxer engine, but now a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre unit producing 191kW and 350Nm coupled to Subaru’s fuel-efficient Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT).
