Diesel

The world’s first BOXER DIESEL for a passenger car first became available on the 2008 Legacy and Outback models and it has continued to evolve since then. Now  mounted on the Forester and Outback, the BOXER DIESEL engine has delivered the levels of quality and sophistication that the Subaru brand identity demands in every vehicle, yet it also expresses characteristics that are suited to each individual model.

Subaru has received enthusiastic comments from drivers and journalists, many of whom are eagerly anticipating the next generation of BOXER DIESEL. Some wonder if Subaru is considering developing a 6 cylinder BOXER DIESEL. Others wonder if there will be a more powerful BOXER DIESEL for an Impreza in the future. Although the possibilities are endless, the fact remains that Subaru vehicles with the BOXER DIESEL have just been introduced in a handful of markets in Europe. We will continue modifying the engine to further elevate its performance and to increase its appeal to drivers.
The BOXER DIESEL also features environmentally sensitive technologies, which further improve the vehicles they are applied to. For example, the new diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the Forester is a closed-type DPF, whereas the DPF originally used in the Legacy is an open-type DPF.

While the BOXER DIESEL is in compliance with the EURO 4 emission standards, Subaru continues to work on emission control systems that meet more stringent standards around the world, including EURO 5.
